Marshmallow is one of those plants that herbal medicine has used for centuries and that modern cosmetics have brought back for a very practical reason: its root is one of the richest sources of mucilage in the plant world.

What marshmallow is and what it contains
Althaea officinalis is a mallow plant, closely related to mallow. Its name comes from the Greek altháino, meaning to heal, which reflects how long it has been used.
The part used in cosmetics is the root, where mucilages are concentrated: polysaccharides that swell on contact with water, forming a gel. It also contains pectins, starch and small amounts of flavonoids. On the label, it appears as Althaea Officinalis Root Extract.
What marshmallow does for the skin
The mechanism is physical before it is biochemical, and it is worth understanding because it explains both what to expect and what not to expect.
Mucilages form a hydrated, slippery film on the surface. This film does three things: it retains water, slowing evaporation; it reduces friction - thereby easing the feeling of roughness and the discomfort caused by rubbing - and creates a temporary barrier between the skin and external irritants.
It is an immediate, surface-level action. It does not change the structure of the skin or stimulate anything, and it disappears when the film is removed. This is why marshmallow works best in formulas that remain in contact with the skin or are used regularly.
Marshmallow is particularly useful in cleansers: mucilages counteract the degreasing effect of surfactants and reduce the tight feeling often noticed immediately after rinsing.
Who it is suitable for
It is especially suited to skin that feels tight, reddens easily or has a weakened skin barrier. It is also one of the most sensible active ingredients for routines that include exfoliants or anti-blemish actives, where something is needed to provide balance without interfering.
In our formulas, marshmallow is found in the detox cleansing mousse and the cream for sensitive skin, always paired with mallow: the two mucilages have different viscosities and together create a more uniform film.

Frequently asked questions about marshmallow
Are marshmallow and mallow the same thing?
They are two different plants from the same family. The leaves and flowers of mallow are used, while the root of marshmallow is used, and it has a higher mucilage content. The effect is similar, but the concentration is not.
Can I make a compress with marshmallow root?
A cold macerate is a traditional herbal preparation, but on facial skin it has an unpredictable concentration, no preservation and a real microbiological risk. Cosmetic extract is standardized and stabilized.
Is marshmallow comedogenic?
No. It is water-soluble and contains no fatty fraction, so it is also suitable for oily and acne-prone skin.
Is it suitable during pregnancy?
There are no known restrictions for topical cosmetic use. As always, if you have questions about your routine during pregnancy, consult your doctor.
How long does the effect last?
Comfort is noticeable immediately and lasts as long as the film remains on the skin. It is an active ingredient to use consistently, not a treatment with progressive results.
