L'marshmallow is the extract of the root of Althaea officinalis, a plant also known as marsh mallow. It belongs to the family of plant-based emollients, and its root is among the richest known sources of mucilage.
The mucilages are polysaccharides that hydrate on contact with water, forming a viscous gel, and on the skin they become a film that reduces friction and the sensation of tightness. In cleansers, however, they do something more interesting: they interact with surfactants and moderate their degreasing action. This is one of the tangible ways a cleansing formula becomes truly gentle—not by reducing its ability to cleanse, but by complementing it.
It is used in formulas for dry and reactive skin, and in daily cleansing, where the result is measured by what the skin does not lose: after rinsing, it remains soft rather than feeling tight. It works within the product, with no contact time or frequency to follow.
It is an ingredient that works quietly: it does not produce a spectacular effect on first use, but changes the quality of a gesture repeated twice a day for years.
