The properties of Mimosa Extract for the skin

Mimosa is the flower most associated with women and has now become the symbol of International Women's Day. This is partly because it is one of the first flowers to bloom at the end of winter, heralding the arrival of spring: it is in fact known as the “winter sun”.

In addition to being a flower with unmistakable beauty, mimosa proves to be an ally in skincare, particularly for mature, dry, or reactive skin.

Its calming and soothing properties are well known and can help reduce redness and feelings of discomfort. Let’s look at where this extract comes from and what it really does for the skin.

Mimosa tenuiflora: the “skin tree”

Also known as the “skin tree” or Tepezcohuite, the extract used in cosmetics appears in the INCI list under the name Mimosa tenuiflora bark extract and is obtained from the plant’s bark. This is the same variety that the Maya traditionally used on skin lesions.

A useful botanical clarification, since the two plants are often confused: Mimosa tenuiflora is the one used in cosmetics for its bark extract. Mimosa pudica, on the other hand, is the famous “sensitive plant”, whose leaves fold when touched — and it is from this plant that the name derives from the Greek mimos, meaning “to imitate”, referring to the movement that resembles an animal reaction. They are two different species of the same genus.

Mimosa tenuiflora extract is rich in flavonoids, tannins, saponins, and trace elements.

The properties of mimosa extract

The bark of Mimosa tenuiflora is used in dermocosmetics for its contribution to maintaining skin hyaluronic acid and as an aid to superficial microcirculation. Its action supports the tissues and accompanies the natural renewal of the epidermis challenged by oxidative and environmental factors.

Mimosa has antioxidant properties that can counteract the action of free radicals, among the main causes of premature aging and a dull complexion. Its soothing properties are also useful for making sensitive skin feel more comfortable.

The saponins in the extract help modulate inflammatory processes and support cellular metabolism.

Flavonoids, in addition to supporting microcirculation, help limit the physiological degradation of hyaluronic acid, which increases with age. Tannins, in turn, have an astringent action that is useful for skin with enlarged pores and blemishes.

In summary, mimosa extract:

  • supports subcutaneous microcirculation;
  • counteracts free radicals;
  • helps modulate inflammatory processes;
  • has an antimicrobial action that is useful for blemish-prone skin;
  • is highly soothing and provides a feeling of freshness and comfort.

As with all botanical active ingredients, mimosa is a cosmetic ingredient. It improves the appearance and comfort of the skin, but it does not treat psoriasis, dermatitis, eczema, or ulcers. For skin conditions, a dermatologist remains the appropriate point of reference.

Who is mimosa extract suitable for?

Mimosa extract is particularly suitable for mature skin showing a loss of firmness and elasticity, sensitive skin prone to redness, and dry skin prone to cracking and flaking.

It is an interesting choice for tired, dull skin looking to regain firmness and a brighter complexion. In general, thanks to its gentleness, it is suitable for all skin types.

The benefits of mimosa extract in Alba cream

For these reasons, LeLang laboratories have included organic Mimosa extract in the formulation of Alba face cream, a firming and toning cream.

Alba contains three patented active ingredients, including Liftonin®-xpert eco, and is designed to support collagen production and improve skin density.
