Why September is the right time for a skin reset
Every year, when September arrives, I find myself taking stock of the same situation: during summer, my skin seems to be “holding up” well. My complexion is more even, small areas of redness are less noticeable, and there’s that golden glow everyone likes. But from personal and professional experience, I know it’s only a temporary illusion.
Behind that tan, there’s often a weakened skin barrier, signs of dehydration, and the early stages of loss of elasticity. I see it in myself and in the people I work with: men and women of different ages and phototypes show the same issues in September.
That’s why I consider this month a true skin check-up: it’s time to repair, restore what the skin has lost, and prepare it for autumn.
What really happens to the skin in summer
When I talk about summer damage, I’m not referring only to sunburn, which is serious and should always be avoided, but to a combination of micro-stresses that build up:
- UVA and UVB rays: penetrate the skin’s layers, causing oxidation and the breakdown of collagen and elastin.
- Wind and salt: increase transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and leave the skin drier and more reactive.
- Chlorine: disrupts the skin’s natural pH and compromises the barrier.
- Pollution: adds further oxidative stress.
The result is skin that, after returning from vacation, looks dull, less elastic, with an uneven texture and prone to dryness. Sometimes spots and discoloration also appear, especially if sun protection hasn’t been consistent.
How to tell when your skin needs a reset
- Dullness: the skin no longer reflects light as it does in June.
- Tight-feeling skin: a sign of moisture loss.
- Uneven texture: more visible pores and less smooth texture.
- Discoloration: spots become more noticeable as the tan fades.
- More pronounced fine lines: caused by summer oxidative damage.
It is not just about appearance: these are signs of functional weakening.
My September routine: four steps
Over time, I have developed a simple approach, suitable for both men and women, that works because it addresses the skin’s real needs after summer.
1. Gentle cleansing
I use cleansers with gentle surfactants and physiological pH. The goal is to cleanse without depleting the barrier. If the skin is very dry, I recommend double cleansing: first a cleansing oil, then the mousse.

2. Smart exfoliation
After summer, I prefer gentle exfoliants such as mandelic acid or PHAs, which renew the skin without stressing it. Once or twice a week is enough: right after summer, skin is more fragile than it seems, and over-exfoliating is the most common mistake in September.

3. Intensive restorative treatment
This is where SkinAge Advance comes in: a single-use mask I designed specifically to give the skin deep hydration, immediate comfort, and barrier support in one application. For me, it is the perfect post-summer booster: I use it once a week during the first few weeks of September.

4. Daily hydration and protection
Serum and cream with hyaluronic acid are the foundation for rebuilding the barrier and keeping skin elastic.

And I never forget sun protection: even in the city and on cloudy days. It is the step that makes everything else in the routine either ineffective or effective.

The ingredients I rely on at this stage
- Hyaluronic acid: immediate, long-lasting hydration.
- Ceramides: essential for rebuilding the barrier.
- Niacinamide: improves elasticity and evens out skin tone.
- Peptides: support the processes involved in collagen and elastin synthesis.
- Antioxidants: stabilized vitamin C and ferulic acid to protect and brighten.
How to incorporate SkinAge Advance into your routine
- Weeks 1-2: SkinAge Advance twice a week, after cleansing and exfoliation.
- Weeks 3-4: maintenance with one application per week.
- Daily routine with barrier cream and SPF.
A mistake I often see in September is wanting to make up for everything in two weeks by layering exfoliants, acids, and intensive treatments. Post-summer skin has a stressed barrier: introducing too many active ingredients at once worsens the situation instead of resolving it. Four to six weeks with a few consistent steps is better.
Lifestyle makes a difference
Skin is not cared for only from the outside:
- I drink enough water every day.
- I add fruit and vegetables rich in antioxidants.
- I supplement omega-3 with fish or oilseeds.
- I maintain a healthy sleep-wake rhythm: skin regenerates at night.
Frequently asked questions
Why does skin get worse in September?
Because the cumulative effects of sun, wind, chlorine, and pollution become apparent: the barrier is weakened and hydration is reduced.
Is SkinAge Advance also suitable for men?
Yes: men's skin has the same hydration and post-summer repair needs.
Is sun protection still necessary in autumn?
Yes, because UVA rays are present all year round and contribute to skin aging.
