An expression wrinkle appears when you move the muscle and disappears when you stop. A static wrinkle is present even when your face is still. They are the same groove at two different moments in its history: almost all static wrinkles were once expression wrinkles.
The distinction is not academic; it determines what you need to buy. For a dynamic wrinkle, a cosmetic product can reduce the contraction and slow its progression to the next stage. For a deep static wrinkle, it can improve its appearance, but not erase it. Confusing the two means buying the right product for the wrong problem.

How a wrinkle forms, in two stages
The first stage is mechanical. Every time you smile, furrow your brow, or squint, the facial muscles pull the skin and crease it in the same place. The crease is perpendicular to the direction of the muscle: that is why forehead wrinkles are horizontal and those between the eyebrows are vertical.
As long as the underlying dermis remains elastic, the skin returns to its place as soon as the muscle relaxes. The wrinkle exists only during movement.
The second stage is structural. Over the years, the network of collagen and elastin that gives the skin the ability to regain its shape becomes depleted and disorganized. At that point, the crease no longer fully reopens and remains etched even at rest. The mechanism by which this network breaks down is explained in how collagen is lost.
The transition from the first stage to the second has no fixed date. It depends on genetics, sun exposure, smoking, sleep, and how much that muscle works. This is also why two people of the same age can have completely different foreheads.
The four categories, and why they are not treated in the same way
Talking about “wrinkles” in the singular is the first cause of misguided expectations. There are at least four types, with different origins.
Dynamic or expression wrinkles. Visible only during movement. Forehead, glabella, eye area, lip contour. Muscular in origin.
Static wrinkles. Visible at rest. They are the evolution of earlier wrinkles, and their depth depends on how much the dermal structure has weakened.
Fine wrinkles caused by photoaging. A fine, diffuse network, typical of the cheeks and cheekbones, that does not follow any muscle. It does not arise from movement but from the accumulated damage caused by ultraviolet radiation, pollution, and oxidative stress, as described in free radicals and antioxidants. This is the category that responds best to cosmetics.
Sagging folds. Creases that form because the tissues descend and lose volume, not because the skin has folded. They are the most resistant to any topical treatment, for one honest reason: the problem is not in the skin, but beneath it.
The mirror test
It takes thirty seconds and clarifies almost everything.
- Look at your completely relaxed face, without expression, in side lighting. What you see is static.
- Now smile, frown, and raise your eyebrows. Lines that appear only now are dynamic.
- Gently stretch the skin with two fingers on either side of the crease. If the line disappears completely, the structural component can still be recovered. If a shadow remains, the crease is deeply etched.
- Lie down and look at yourself with a hand mirror. Folds that soften considerably when you are lying down are caused by sagging, not expression: gravity, not the muscle, is correcting them.
The fourth step is the one no one takes, and it is the most useful: it distinguishes a wrinkle from a gravitational fold, which are two completely different product markets.
“Almost all static wrinkles began as expression lines. The time to act is before they finish transforming.”
What a cosmetic can do, category by category
This is the practical part, and it is better to be precise rather than optimistic.
Peptides that interfere with signal transmission at the neuromuscular junction work on dynamic wrinkles, reducing the strength of the contraction. The best-known member of the family is Acetyl Hexapeptide-8. Most of the available efficacy data comes from manufacturer testing, and it is right to be aware of this: the effect is measurable but gradual and reversible, and it is not comparable to an injectable treatment.
For superficial static wrinkles, the active ingredients that stimulate renewal and matrix synthesis are effective: retinoids, vitamin C, signal peptides such as Matrixyl, and chemical exfoliants used at a controlled frequency. The result is real but requires months.
For photoaging wrinkles, the main approach is preventive: daily sun protection and antioxidants working in synergy. This is the category in which the effort-to-result ratio is best, and also the only one in which prevention can truly be discussed.
For sagging folds, a cosmetic provides an immediate, temporary surface-tightening effect, which is different from firming. The distinction between these two time scales is explained in immediate lifting effect.

What it cannot do, and should be said
A cosmetic acts on the appearance of the skin. It does not paralyze a muscle, restore lost volume, or lift sagging tissue. Those are areas of aesthetic medicine, with different tools, risks, and costs.
This does not make cosmetics useless: it puts them in context. On a young dynamic wrinkle, a good product used consistently can slow its deepening. On a deep static wrinkle, it can make it less visible because the surrounding skin is more hydrated, firmer, and reflects light better. These are honest, verifiable results, provided no one promises otherwise.
When a wrinkle is very pronounced, or when the goal is visible correction within a few weeks, the right response is a medical evaluation, not another cream.

Elisa's note
The question I receive most often is which cream removes wrinkles. The right question would be different: which of my wrinkles are visible even when my face is still? The former can still be slowed down; the latter can be diminished. Knowing which group you fall into is the quickest way to stop buying products that are irrelevant.
When to start
There is no one age that works for everyone, but there is a sign: the moment when a line that previously appeared only with facial expressions begins to show even at rest. From then on, you are dealing with a wrinkle in transition, and this is the phase in which cosmetics deliver the best results.
Waiting until the wrinkle is deep means changing the goal: no longer slowing it down, but diminishing something that has already formed. It can be done, but the margin for improvement is smaller.
The active ingredients to start with and the order in which to introduce them are covered in the five active ingredients for preventing premature aging and in how to use anti-aging cream.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a Botox effect without injections?
Not in the sense in which the phrase is used in advertising. Botox acts on the neuromuscular junction and temporarily blocks contraction: it is a drug, it is injected, and no topical cosmetic does the same thing. Peptides referred to as "Botox-like" reduce the extent of contraction partially, gradually, and reversibly, and much of the data comes from manufacturers' tests. It is a real result for a still-young dynamic wrinkle, but it is on a different scale. Anyone expecting the equivalent of an injection will be disappointed; those who want to slow the deepening of a forming line, however, have a tool that makes sense to use.
Does stopping facial expressions prevent wrinkles?
No, and it isn't desirable. Facial expressions are a function, not a habit to correct. What makes sense to reduce is involuntary, repeated contraction, such as squinting in bright light, which can be prevented with sunglasses.
Do expression lines appear earlier in dry skin?
They appear earlier, which is not the same thing. Dehydrated skin shows fine lines that soften considerably with hydration: those are not wrinkles yet.
Does sleeping on one side make them worse?
Repeated nighttime compression contributes to vertical cheek and décolleté lines. It is not the main factor, but it is one of the few that can be modified at no cost.
Do peptides really work, or is it marketing?
They have documented activity, but much of the data comes from manufacturers' tests on small samples. The effect is gradual and is lost when use is discontinued.
Why do my wrinkles seem worse on certain days?
Hydration, sleep, alcohol, and inflammation change the water content of the stratum corneum and therefore the way the surface reflects light. The wrinkle is the same; what changes is how visible it is.
How long does it take to evaluate an anti-aging product?
No fewer than eight to twelve weeks. Under four weeks, you are only looking at the moisturizing effect.
