Argireline®, the trade name for Acetyl Hexapeptide-8, is probably the best-known peptide in anti-aging skincare. It is often called “Botox in a cream” — an oversimplification that deserves clarification, because the mechanism is similar in principle but very different in scope.
It is a short peptide, six amino acids long, developed to reduce expression lines by acting on the contraction of facial muscles.
[INDICE:h2]Why Expression Lines Form
Beneath the skin of the face are the facial muscles, which are responsible for our ability to express emotions. Unlike other muscles in the body, they are attached directly to the skin: every time we smile, frown, or squint, they pull the skin inward.
Repeated thousands of times a day over the years, this movement creates folds that initially appear only during facial expressions — dynamic wrinkles — and eventually become permanent, remaining visible even when the face is relaxed.
This is the logic behind Argireline: by reducing the intensity of the contraction, it reduces repeated tension on the skin and slows the formation of creases.
How Acetyl Hexapeptide-8 Works
The mechanism acts on the SNARE complex, a group of proteins that allows vesicles containing acetylcholine to fuse with the membrane and release the neurotransmitter that triggers muscle contraction.
Argireline is designed to mimic a portion of the SNAP-25 protein, interfering with the assembly of the complex and thereby reducing the intensity of the signal. Contraction is not blocked: it is attenuated.
This is the fundamental difference from botulinum toxin. Botox is an injectable drug that markedly and prolongs neuromuscular transmission blockade. Argireline is a topical cosmetic: it acts on the surface, with a much milder, temporary, and reversible effect. It is not a substitute for medical treatment, but a cosmetic alternative with different goals.
What the Tests Show
The available data come from tests conducted by the manufacturer, Lipotec (Lubrizol group).
A study conducted on female volunteers between the ages of 32 and 60, involving the application of a 2% peptide cream twice daily for 28 days, evaluated the reduction in skin roughness using 3D microtopographic imaging, measured after facial expressions had relaxed. A second test on the crow’s-feet area found a reduction in wrinkle area and depth after just five days of treatment.
As with all patented active ingredients, these data come from tests conducted by the company that produces the ingredient, not from independent studies published in peer-reviewed journals. They should be interpreted as indications of potential efficacy in a formula. The mechanism of action involving the SNARE complex, however, is described in the scientific literature.
Which Wrinkles It Works On
Argireline delivers the best results on dynamic wrinkles, those caused by movement: crow’s feet, forehead lines, and glabellar lines between the eyebrows.
Its effect is much more limited on deep static wrinkles, which are already structured in the dermis due to the loss of collagen and elastin. These require active ingredients that work on the dermal matrix — signal peptides, retinoids, and collagen stimulators.
This distinction is useful for setting realistic expectations: Argireline helps prevent and soften wrinkles; it does not erase them.
How to Use It
Apply morning and evening to cleansed skin, before moisturizer. Like all peptides, it works cumulatively: initial effects are expected after several weeks of consistent use, and if application is discontinued, muscle activity gradually returns to its usual behavior.
It is well tolerated and non-photosensitizing, so it can be combined without problems with hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, vitamin C, and antioxidants in general.

Frequently Asked Questions About Argireline
Is Argireline Really Botox in a Cream?
No, and it is important to clarify this. It shares the same biological target — the transmission of the signal that triggers contraction — but acts topically, with much lower intensity and in a reversible way. The comparison is useful for understanding the principle, but misleading if taken literally.
How Long Does It Take to See Results?
The manufacturer’s tests report instrumentally measurable changes after just five days, but several weeks of consistent application are needed for a visible effect to the naked eye.
Are There Any Contraindications?
It is considered safe and well tolerated, including on sensitive skin. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, as with all cosmetic active ingredients, it is advisable to consult your doctor.
At What Age Can It Be Used?
It makes sense to use it when the first dynamic wrinkles begin to appear, generally from the age of thirty. Used preventively, it is more effective than on wrinkles that are already established.
