Time leaves visible marks on the skin. It cannot be stopped, but premature aging can be slowed — the kind caused by external factors, which is the part we can genuinely influence.
Wrinkles are the result of a life filled with expressions and emotions. The difference lies in recognizing when skin is aging physiologically and when external factors are accelerating the process. Here are the five actives supported by the strongest evidence.
1. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid)
Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant and one of the few actives with a documented biochemical role: it is an essential cofactor in collagen synthesis. Without vitamin C, fibroblasts cannot produce stable collagen.
It also helps even out the complexion, reducing the appearance of redness and hyperpigmentation. Its limitation is instability: it oxidizes easily, which is why it should be combined with other molecules.
2. Ferulic acid
Little known but decisive, ferulic acid is a plant-derived antioxidant that acts on the enzymes involved in free-radical generation and enhances the action of scavenger enzymes, the “clean-up crew” that neutralizes reactive species.
Its most valuable role, however, is another: it stabilizes vitamin C. Research conducted at Duke University showed that adding ferulic acid to a solution of vitamins C and E doubles its photoprotective effect. This is why the two are almost always found together.

3. Niacinamide (vitamin B3)
Niacinamide is the precursor of two coenzymes, NAD and NADP, both of which are necessary for repair processes and cellular function. It helps counteract oxidative stress-induced DNA damage and supports the skin’s defenses.
It is also one of the best-tolerated actives overall: it increases the production of ceramides, strengthens the skin barrier and evens out the complexion, while rarely causing irritation.
4. Peptides and collagen boosters
Peptides are protein fragments that act as signals: by interacting with skin receptors, they modulate communication between cells and support the synthesis of structural proteins.
Bulbine frutescens extract works along the same lines, acting as a plant-based booster that stimulates fibroblasts to produce type I collagen, supporting tone and elasticity.
A clarification, because marketing around these actives is often excessive: a collagen booster does not prevent wrinkle formation and does not “fill” the dermis. It supports the skin’s physiological production and improves tone and firmness — a real result, but one of a different nature.

5. Sun protection
The most important active of all is not in an anti-aging cream: it is sunscreen. It is the only measure with a proven preventive effect on skin aging, because it prevents damage rather than repairing it.
And the evidence is not theoretical. In a four-and-a-half-year randomized Australian study, the group that used sunscreen daily showed measurably less skin aging than the group that used it at its discretion. It is one of the few studies on aging prevention with this level of methodological strength.
Broad-spectrum SPF 50 protection, used year-round, counteracts photoaging and prevents the appearance of dark spots. Without it, all four other actives are working to repair damage that continues to accumulate every day.

How to combine them
You do not need to use them all together from day one. A sensible sequence:
- In the morning: antioxidant serum with vitamin C and ferulic acid, moisturizer, sunscreen.
- In the evening: serum with peptides or renewing actives, followed by a richer cream.
- Around the eyes, where the skin is thinner, use a dedicated treatment.

Above all: introduce one active at a time, and give each one at least four to six weeks before judging it. Consistency matters more than the number of products.
