The skin is the most visible and extensive organ of our body and acts as a natural protective barrier against harmful substances and external agents.
However, not everyone may know that our skin is a dynamic organ: it constantly changes in response to the surrounding environment, our general state of health and the cosmetic treatments it receives.
[INDICE:h2]Why every skin is different
Our skin has specific characteristics that make it different from any other, starting with its structure at the cellular level and extending to more visible aspects such as pigmentation, sensitivity, hydration and sebum production.
In addition to internal factors, age and hormonal changes, the skin is affected by the external environment, which can cause functional changes and alterations in its appearance.
How the skin changes with the seasons
In winter, low temperatures and icy winds tend to alter the skin’s hydrolipidic film, causing redness, dryness, chapping and irritation on the face. During these months, more nourishing products are needed to support the skin barrier.
During the summer season, on the other hand, the main priority becomes protecting the skin from solar radiation and heat: choosing a lighter skincare routine, combined with adequate sun protection, is essential.
We must also consider the effects of pollutants and fine particulate matter, which generate free radicals and are often among the causes of small skin imperfections.
The air we live in — whether in the city, by the sea or in the mountains — also affects the appearance of our face. Every day, the epidermis changes according to our mood, stress levels, hours of sleep and diet: this is the field studied by neurocosmetics.
Learning to listen to your skin
We need to learn to listen to our skin, understand how it changes periodically and identify the care it needs to stay healthy throughout the year and throughout our lives.
Just as the weather, seasons and our habits change, the skin also changes — and skincare must adapt accordingly.
A useful first step is to identify your skin type: for example, determine whether you have dry or dehydrated skin — two different conditions that require different approaches — or whether you have oily skin or sensitive skin.
All the products and treatments that may be suitable for one person are probably not right for you as well. Just as with diets or clothing, every skin needs a personalized approach.
Skincare must be individual. Ignoring your skin’s needs by using products incorrectly, or simply because they work for someone else, can result in ineffective or even counterproductive treatments.
