Collagen in cosmetics: what really works

Collagen is the most abundant protein in our body and makes up approximately 75% of the skin's dry weight. It is responsible for skin elasticity, firmness, and resilience. As we age, collagen production decreases, and wrinkles and loss of tone appear.

However, a great deal of inaccurate information circulates about collagen in cosmetics. In this article, we explore what it really does, which forms exist, and — above all — what a cream containing it can and cannot do.

What is collagen and why does it matter?

It is a structural protein found in the skin, tendons, and ligaments, where it supports connective tissues. In the dermis, it forms a network that, together with elastin and hyaluronic acid, provides structure and volume.

It is produced by fibroblasts, dermal cells whose activity slows with age, unprotected sun exposure, and oxidative stress. The overall functioning of this architecture is explained in the guide to the skin barrier.

The key question: does collagen applied to the skin work?

Clarity is needed here, because this is where cosmetic marketing is most ambiguous.

The collagen molecule is too large to cross the stratum corneum. A collagen cream does not deliver new collagen to the dermis, and it could not: the skin barrier exists precisely to prevent molecules of that size from passing through. Anyone who promises otherwise is claiming something that physiology does not allow.

This does not mean it is useless. Topically applied collagen acts as a film-forming and humectant: it forms a film that reduces transepidermal water loss, immediately improving the softness and appearance of the surface. This is a real and noticeable effect, but it is superficial and temporary, not structural.

In cosmetics, the approach that really works is different: stimulating fibroblasts to produce their own collagen. This is what certain peptides do, acting as cellular signals, along with vitamin C, an essential cofactor in collagen synthesis, and retinoids.

The forms found in cosmetics

  • Hydrolyzed collagen: broken down into smaller peptides. It has excellent moisturizing and film-forming properties, but even in this form it does not rebuild dermal collagen.
  • Marine collagen: rich in amino acids, with good skin affinity. The same considerations regarding penetration apply.
  • Bioactive peptides: these are not collagen, but fragments that signal fibroblasts to produce it. This is the category with the strongest rationale.
  • "Plant collagen": the term is inaccurate. Collagen is a protein of animal origin, and plants do not produce it. This name is used for complexes of amino acids and botanical actives that stimulate endogenous synthesis, or for collagen produced through biotechnology. In the case of Liftonin-xpert eco, it is a plant-based booster that acts on the skin's own production: this is a different and more sensible approach than "adding collagen."

What the studies say

The most useful distinction concerns the route of administration.

Regarding oral collagen, recent literature is more encouraging: several studies on hydrolyzed collagen peptides have found improvements in skin hydration and elasticity after several weeks of intake. It should be noted that many of these studies are funded by supplement manufacturers and that methodological variability is high.

Regarding topical collagen, the evidence mainly concerns moisturizing and superficial improvement, not reconstruction of the dermal matrix.

A practical rule when you read a collagen claim: always ask whether the cited study concerns an oral supplement or a cream. They are two different things, and confusing the two is the most common trick in beauty communications about this ingredient.

How to truly support your skin's collagen

  1. Daily sun protection. This is by far the most effective measure: UV rays activate the metalloproteinases that break down existing collagen. Protecting it is more effective than trying to rebuild it.
  2. Antioxidants. Vitamin C and ferulic acid limit oxidative damage to the matrix.
  3. Peptides. They act on cellular communication, supporting endogenous synthesis.
  4. Retinoids, when tolerated, for their effect on cell renewal.
  5. Lifestyle: smoking and blood sugar spikes accelerate collagen breakdown through glycation.

Collagen and aesthetic treatments

In aesthetic medicine, there are procedures that stimulate collagen production mechanically or thermally — microneedling and fractional laser — as well as procedures that introduce dermal fillers. These are medical treatments that require assessment by a licensed professional: a cosmetic product does not replace or replicate them.

In summary

Collagen remains central to skin quality, but the most effective way to care for it is not to apply it: it is to protect what you have and stimulate fibroblasts to produce more. A collagen cream hydrates and improves the appearance of the surface, and that is perfectly fine: the problem only arises when it is credited with powers it cannot have.
