Minimalist skincare routine: healthy skin with just a few products

As the founder of LeLang, my philosophy has always been to promote personalized skincare tailored to individual needs. The best results come from a simple approach: effective cleansing, a few carefully selected actives, and regular weekly exfoliation.

I don't believe in ten-step routines. They are expensive, often unnecessary, and, something that is frequently underestimated, stress the skin: the more products are layered, the greater the likelihood of incompatibilities between actives and irritation. A routine must be sustainable over time, because consistency—not intensity—is what delivers results.

Why “less” often works better

There are three concrete reasons, beyond the philosophy.

The skin barrier has a limit. Every exfoliating active or acid added to your routine asks the barrier to adapt. Once a certain threshold is exceeded, the skin does not improve: it becomes reactive.

You can no longer tell what works. With seven products applied together, if irritation appears, it is impossible to identify the culprit. With four, it is possible.

Actives can interfere with one another. Some require different pH levels, while others compete for the same receptors. Layering them does not add up the benefits.

The essential steps

1. Gentle cleanser

Cleansing is the first step in removing impurities, sebum, and makeup residue from the skin. A good cleanser respects the skin's balance without disrupting the barrier: no harsh surfactants and no “tight skin” feeling after rinsing, which is not a sign of cleanliness but of excessive lipid removal.

2. A serum with targeted actives

This is the step where the real work is concentrated. The actives with the strongest supporting research are hyaluronic acid for hydration, niacinamide for the skin barrier and an even complexion, vitamin C for antioxidant protection, and peptides for tone and firmness.

Practical advice: choose one or two, not four. And give them time to work.

3. Moisturizer

It helps keep the skin supple and lock in hydration, providing protection against environmental factors. It is also the step that makes the actives applied beforehand more tolerable.

4. Sunscreen

If I had to eliminate everything except two products, I would keep the cleanser and sunscreen. It is the only step with a proven preventive effect on skin aging: without it, the anti-aging actives applied at night work to repair damage that continues to accumulate every day.

5. Weekly exfoliation

Once or twice a week, to remove dead skin cells and promote cell renewal. A gentle exfoliant—enzymatic or with mandelic acid—is preferable to mechanical scrubs, especially if the skin is reactive.

A minimalist routine does not mean a poor routine. It means that every product has a specific purpose and that none of them is there “because it was on sale.” Before adding something, the useful question is: what problem does it solve that the other four do not already address?

How long to wait before judging

The most common mistake is not using too few products: it is changing them too soon. The epidermis's cell turnover takes about four weeks, and some actives show results only after two or three cycles.

Keep the same routine for at least four to six weeks before evaluating it, and introduce only one new product at a time. It is the only way to truly know what is working.

A personalized approach

Every skin type is different and needs a tailored protocol. There is no need to apply dozens of products: the quality and selection of ingredients matter more than quantity. If you do not know where to start, the first step is to understand what type of skin you have—you can do this with our skin type quiz—or speak directly with me.
