How to limit the signs of aging on the hands: routine and tips

Hands are constantly exposed to skin-aggressive factors: UV rays, pollution, smoke, and frequent use of cleansers, both for personal hygiene and household cleaning. Over time, they show signs of aging — wrinkles, dryness, and discoloration — often before the face.

To keep them soft and well cared for, they need a targeted routine, just like the face: specific products, consistent hydration, and antioxidant actives that help slow the signs of aging.

Why hands age faster

There is a precise anatomical reason. The skin on the hands is thin and has few sebaceous glands compared with the rest of the body: it therefore produces less protective hydrolipidic film and is more prone to dryness and loss of elasticity.

Frequent washing and the use of harsh products also contribute — alcohol-based sanitizers above all — further removing the lipids that remain. As a result, hands can look older than the rest of the body, with wrinkles, dryness, and sunspots appearing prematurely.

The backs of the hands are also one of the areas where cumulative sun damage is most evident, because no one applies sunscreen there. That is why age spots appear there before elsewhere: it is not age, but exposure.

How to prevent and counteract the signs

Hydration is the foundation. Creams rich in emollients such as shea butter or argan oil help retain water and nourish the skin deeply.

Sun protection remains the most effective measure. Applying it to your hands as well, even in winter, substantially reduces the appearance of dark spots and signs of aging. It is the simplest recommendation — and the most widely ignored.

Gentle exfoliation once or twice a week supports cell renewal and improves the skin’s overall appearance. From within, a diet rich in vitamin C and vitamin E supports collagen synthesis and counteracts free radicals.

Choosing a cleanser

It is the most critical step, and the most overlooked. Many traditional soaps dry out and irritate the skin, removing the lipids that protect it. A cleanser formulated with mild surfactants and emollient agents, on the other hand, helps keep the skin barrier intact.

If you wash your hands ten times a day, the cleanser has a greater impact on your skin’s health than any cream you apply at night.

Relax Hand Wash

Part of the Essentia Spa line, Relax Hand Wash is specifically designed for frequent cleansing.

It has a foaming gel texture enriched with hazelnut oil and grapeseed oil, which nourish the skin while keeping it supple. Calendula and chamomile extracts have a soothing action, while red vine extract provides antioxidant polyphenols.

The distinctive ingredient is Tephrosia Purpurea extract, a neurocosmetic active that acts on the modulation of skin cortisol and the release of beta-endorphins.

The most frequently cited data on this active — a 70% reduction in cortisol production and a 163% increase in beta-endorphins — come from the manufacturer’s in vitro tests, not from independent clinical studies. They indicate the molecule’s potential in the formula, and we believe it is important to disclose their origin.

Why it matters

Every time we wash our hands, we underestimate the impact of cleansers on the skin. A carefully formulated product transforms a gesture repeated dozens of times a day into a moment that does not cause damage, rather than one that gradually wears the skin down.

Taking care of your hands means paying attention to a part of the body that is often neglected, but is among the first to reveal how we treat our skin.
