Twice a day. There you go—if you came here just for that, you can stop reading: morning and evening, every day. The problem is that this answer alone isn’t very useful. Because the real question almost every man asks isn’t how many times, but how long do I need to keep going before I see something? And that’s where things get more interesting.
People who start a routine tend to give up between the second and third week. Not because it doesn’t work, but because by then nothing visible has happened yet, and without realistic expectations it can seem like wasted time. It’s worth understanding what to expect, and when.

Morning and evening do two different jobs
Many people think their evening routine is the same as their morning routine, just done later. In reality, the two moments have opposite goals, and that changes which products you use.
In the morning, your skin needs to be prepared and protected. Over the following hours, it will encounter sun, smog, air conditioning, and possibly a razor blade. So: a gentle cleanse, an antioxidant if you use one, and sunscreen as the final step before you leave the house. That’s it.
The evening has a different purpose: remove and repair. Your face has accumulated sebum, sweat, sunscreen residue, and particulate matter. They need to be removed; otherwise, they’ll stay there all night and clog your pores. It’s also the right time for more intensive actives—peptides, acids, targeted treatments—because cell turnover speeds up at night and there’s no sun to interfere.
If you have to cut something because you’re short on time, skip the morning cleanse, never the evening one. Going to bed with dirty skin undoes much of the work done during the day.
Three times a day? No
This happens especially to people with oily skin: their face starts to shine around mid-afternoon, so they wash it for a third time. That’s counterproductive. Every cleanse removes some of the hydrolipidic film, and when the skin realizes it has been “degreased,” it responds by producing more sebum. Within a few weeks, you’ll be shinier than before.
The same goes for anyone who shaves every day: the razor is already a daily mechanical assault, and adding another cleanse on top means asking too much. If you feel the need to freshen your face during the day, use a thermal water spray—it refreshes the sensation without disturbing the skin barrier.

The gym is a separate matter: after working out, you need to wash your face—sweat and sebum together are a real problem. But that becomes your evening cleanse, not an addition.
How long does it take to work?
This is the crux of the matter. Skin completely renews itself in about 28 days when you are young, and takes longer with age. This is the biological rhythm that every cosmetic product works with, and it cannot be sped up at will.
Indicative time frames with consistent use:
- A few days: the skin feels softer, less tight, and post-shaving redness calms down sooner. These are comfort effects—immediate but superficial.
- 3–4 weeks: this is when the first real change becomes visible. More even texture, less shine, and a less dull complexion. This is when most people give up, just before seeing the results.
- 2–3 months: fewer blemishes, less visible pores, and a more even complexion.
- 4–6 months and beyond: tone, firmness, expression lines. Everything related to collagen always requires this amount of time.
If a product promises to make wrinkles disappear in a week, it is referring to a temporary optical effect — film-forming and tightening — not a real change in the skin.
The right order: from the most fluid to the thickest
You do not need to memorize a routine. There is only one rule: go from the lightest texture to the heaviest. A watery serum cannot penetrate a rich cream that has already been applied, whereas the reverse works.
So: cleanser, optional toner or thermal water, serum, eye contour, moisturizer, and sunscreen last in the morning. If you do not use a step, skip it and move on — it is not a sequence you have to follow in full.
A detail that almost everyone gets wrong: it is best to wait for one product to be absorbed before applying the next. Thirty seconds, no more. Layering serums onto skin that is still damp with product means neither of them works properly.
What not to combine
Some combinations cancel each other out or cause irritation. The most relevant ones in a men's routine:
- Exfoliating acids and retinoids on the same evening: double stress on the skin barrier. Alternate them, using one per evening.
- Several acids at the same time: salicylic acid in the cleanser, glycolic acid in the toner, and a peel at the weekend. It may seem logical, but in reality it is a recipe for reactive skin.
- Powerful active ingredients immediately after shaving: the skin has just been cut, so wait a few hours or postpone it until the evening. You can find everything about this in the guide on how to soothe sensitive skin after shaving.
Vitamin C and niacinamide, on the other hand, can be used together without any problems: the old idea that they neutralize each other comes from studies conducted at temperatures that do not exist on the skin. If you want to better understand what each ingredient does, we discuss it in the guide to active ingredients in men’s skincare.
The minimum routine that really sticks
If you’re short on time — as most people are — this is the version that works without becoming a chore.
Morning: cleanse, then apply sunscreen. Two steps, one minute.
Evening: cleanse, then apply a serum or cream depending on what you need.
Three products in total. Done every day, this routine beats a seven-step routine that you abandon by November. To build it from scratch, there is the practical guide to men’s skincare, while if you have oily or blemish-prone skin, it is worth following the routine for acne and oily skin.

If you skip a few days
Nothing serious happens, but the results are delayed. Cosmetic actives work cumulatively: the skin responds to repeated stimulation, not to a single application. A week-long break does not erase your progress, but it puts it on standby.
The situation where inconsistency really matters is sun protection. There, every day you skip means accumulated damage that cannot be undone, and it is also why travel-friendly pocket sizes exist.
If you want to work on signs of aging, where consistency matters even more, the anti-aging skincare routine for men explains how to structure it.
Frequently asked questions
If I wash my face in the evening, do I need to do it again in the morning?
Yes, even if your skin looks clean. During the night, the sebaceous glands continue to work — more than during the day in many men — and sebum, sweat, and pillow residue remain on the face. However, you don’t need the same product: in the morning, a gentle cleanse is enough; in some cases, just lukewarm water if your skin is dry or reactive. The more thorough cleanse is the evening one.
Do I need moisturizer if I have oily skin?
Yes, and it's the most common misunderstanding. Oily doesn't mean hydrated: sebum and water are two different things, and skin can be shiny and dehydrated at the same time. Skipping moisturizer prompts it to produce even more sebum to compensate for water loss. What changes is the texture: you need a lightweight, non-comedogenic formula, not a rich cream.
Can I use shower gel or soap on my face?
Better not. Body cleansers have a more alkaline pH and harsher surfactants than those formulated for the face, where the skin is thinner and the hydrolipidic film more delicate. The feeling of skin "squeaking" after using soap isn't successful cleansing: it's a sign that you've also removed what your skin needed.
Is it better to do your skincare before or after showering?
Afterward, and for a practical reason: products spread better on slightly damp skin, and humectants find water to hold on to. Ideally, apply them within a few minutes, before evaporation dries your face. One tip: very hot shower water strips the skin's hydrolipidic film, so if you have reactive skin, it's best to rinse your face separately with lukewarm water.
In short
Twice a day, morning and evening, with different goals. Never three times. First signs after three or four weeks, solid changes between two and six months. Apply from the lightest to the thickest texture. Above all: it's better to use three products consistently than ten only occasionally.
The difficult part is still the first choice: understanding whether your face needs a sebum-regulating product or an after-shave soothing product first changes the entire basic routine, and it's difficult to determine by eye. At LeLang partner pharmacies, you can have your skin assessed in person before getting started.
