Thermal water spray: skincare in a single gesture

Elisa Avalleof Elisa Avalle , founder of LeLang

Thermal water spray helps soothe and refresh the skin: it provides minerals and trace elements, reduces the sensation of heat and irritation, and supports surface hydration. It is the simplest skincare step—just a few sprays are enough—and can be used after cleansing, sun exposure, exercise or shaving, and whenever you feel your skin tightening.

The first thing to know, because it changes the result: thermal water does not replace moisturizer. If you spray it on and let it evaporate, the hydrating effect lasts only a few minutes—in fact, as it evaporates, it can take some of the skin's water with it. Pat it dry and follow with a moisturizer to seal it in. Used this way, it does exactly what it promises.

What it is and why it works

Thermal water sprays are made with spring thermal water, often enriched with minerals and active ingredients. The practical advantage is obvious: you can keep them in your bag and use them whenever needed—on vacation, before a meeting, or after exercise to calm redness.

There are two times of year when skin tends to become dehydrated and its defenses weaken: summer, with intense sunlight and air conditioning, and winter, with heating and temperature fluctuations. In both cases, fine dust, pollution and the blue light from devices add to oxidative stress.

Thermal waters owe their effects to their composition: the presence of minerals and trace elements such as zinc, magnesium and calcium helps maintain the skin's moisture balance and soothe irritation. The mechanism is explained in detail in the article on why thermal water is good for the skin.

They are particularly valued for their soothing action, which provides immediate relief from redness and a sensation of heat, as well as for their lightweight hydration: they absorb without feeling heavy or leaving residue.

How to choose the best thermal water for your face

Pharmacies carry dozens of them, and they all look the same. There are four criteria that really make a difference.

  1. Pure or formulated. This is the main distinction, and we explain it below: it completely changes what you can expect from the product.
  2. Fixed residue. Water that is richer in minerals leaves the skin feeling slightly "tight" as it dries, while lighter water does not. For very reactive skin, the latter is preferable.
  3. The dispenser. A fine mist covers the face evenly without dripping; a coarse spray wastes product and soaks your clothes. It is a detail you notice only when using it, but it affects the result.
  4. The goal. If you only need to refresh, pure water is enough. If you also want antioxidant or hydrating benefits, you need a formula with active ingredients.

No thermal water is the best in every situation: it depends on your needs. The useful question is not “which one is the best?” but “what do I need that water alone does not provide?” If the answer is “nothing, I just want to refresh,” the simplest product is also the most sensible choice.

Pure or formulated thermal water: they are not the same thing

The same term, “thermal water spray,” refers to two different categories.

Pure thermal waters contain only spring water and its natural minerals. They have a simple formulation and a very broad tolerance profile.

Formulated thermal waters, such as LeLang’s, start with the same base but add functional active ingredients: vitamins, hyaluronic acid, and plant extracts. They offer greater cosmetic benefits—antioxidant, hydrating, and rebalancing—but precisely for this reason they should be chosen according to your skin type and desired outcome, and are not interchangeable with a simple thermal water.

Pro Age: the antioxidant booster

Pro Age Thermal Water is designed for mature, demanding skin. It comes from the sulphurous waters of the Piedmont mountains, rich in magnesium, iron, calcium, potassium, and zinc, and is enriched with hyaluronic acid and Pueraria Lobata (Kudzu) root extract.

Hyaluronic acid helps retain water on the surface, improving the appearance of fine lines and the feeling of elasticity. Kudzu provides isoflavones such as daidzein, genistein, and puerarin—molecules with antioxidant activity that help counteract oxidative stress.

Frequently asked questions

What is thermal water used for on the face?

It helps soothe and refresh: it provides minerals and trace elements, offers immediate relief from feelings of heat and irritation, and supports surface hydration. In enriched formulas, the action of the active ingredients, such as vitamins or antioxidants, is also added. However, it does not replace moisturizer: it should always be followed by a product that seals in hydration.

How to use thermal water in your daily routine

The right time to use it is immediately after cleansing and before serum, while the skin is still slightly damp: it prepares the face for subsequent treatments and helps them spread more easily. During the day, it can be used freely to refresh the skin, after exercise, after sun exposure, after shaving, or to set makeup. Spray from 20–30 cm away from the face and gently pat without rubbing.

Should it be rinsed off or left to dry?

Neither: pat away the excess after about twenty seconds and immediately apply the next product. Letting it air-dry is the most common mistake, because as it evaporates, it also takes away some of the skin’s water, leaving it feeling drier than before.

Can thermal water and hyaluronic acid be used together?

Yes, and it is actually the most sensible combination — in Pro Age, the two are already part of the same formula. Hyaluronic acid draws in water and retains it on the surface, so it works better on slightly damp skin than on dry skin. However, the same rule always applies: a cream should be applied on top; otherwise, in a dry environment, the water drawn to the surface evaporates and the effect is lost.

How long does the effect last?

The relief is immediate but short-lived if the product is left to evaporate. For a longer-lasting effect, it is best to pat away the excess and immediately apply a moisturizer, which retains the water instead of letting it evaporate.

Can it be used over makeup?

Yes, and it is one of its most practical uses: sprayed from a fixed distance, it sets makeup and removes the powdery effect of foundation. The important thing is not to pat the skin dry afterward, so as not to disturb the makeup; in this case, let it air-dry.

Can thermal water be used on children?

It depends on the product, and this is an important distinction. Pure thermal waters, made solely from spring water, are often suitable for use in children as well, according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Thermal waters formulated with added active ingredients, such as Pro Age and Multi Vit, are cosmetic products designed for adult skin: they contain vitamins, hyaluronic acid, and plant extracts, and have not been tested for use under the age of 3. For this reason, we do not recommend using them on young children.

If you are looking for a product for a child’s skin, the right person to consult is the pediatrician, who can recommend the appropriate formulation for the child’s age.
