Enzymatic facial peeling: what it is and why it differs from scrubs and acids

An enzyme peel is an exfoliating treatment that neither scrubs nor acidifies the skin: it uses plant-derived enzymes that digest the proteins holding dead surface cells together. These cells detach, while the rest of the skin is left untouched.

This is the difference that matters: a scrub works through friction, an acid peel works by lowering pH, and an enzyme peel works selectively. It acts only on what is already dead, which is why it is the type of exfoliation tolerated even by sensitive skin and skin prone to couperose.

How an enzyme peel works

The enzymes used in cosmetics are proteases, meaning enzymes that break the bonds between proteins. The most common are papain, derived from papaya, and bromelain, which comes from pineapple.

In the skin's outermost layer, dead cells remain attached to one another by protein bridges called desmosomes. A proteolytic enzyme cuts these bridges: the cells detach on their own and are washed away when rinsed. The living cells underneath have a different structure and are not affected.

This is where the practical advantage lies. A scrub does not distinguish: its action depends on how hard you rub, and on reactive skin, very little is enough to cause micro-injuries. An exfoliating acid works by lowering the skin's surface pH; it is effective but may sting and requires greater care in the sun. An enzyme does one thing, and does it where needed.

Enzyme peel, chemical peel, or scrub: which one should you choose?

These are three different practices that are often called by the same name, which creates quite a bit of confusion.

Scrubs are a form of mechanical exfoliation: they use microbeads to remove dead skin through friction. They work on the body, where the skin is thicker. On the face, they are the riskiest method because you control the pressure, and it is almost always too much.

Acid peels use alpha and beta hydroxy acids — glycolic, mandelic, lactic, and salicylic — which loosen the bonds between corneocytes. The enzyme peel is the most selective and least aggressive of the three. In return, it is also the least powerful: if your goal is established dark spots or acne scars, the enzyme alone is not enough.

Many formulas today combine the two approaches—a gentle acid plus the enzymatic component—to provide both effectiveness and tolerability.

Who it is really for

An enzyme peel makes sense in four specific situations.

Sensitive or reactive skin. This is the main reason it exists. For those who cannot tolerate acids and whose skin becomes red with scrubs, this is a genuine alternative. If you do not know how to tell sensitive skin from irritated skin, the difference is explained in the guide to sensitive skin.

Dull skin and uneven texture. Buildup of dead skin cells makes light reflect unevenly: skin looks gray even when it is hydrated. Removing it is the quickest way to restore radiance.

Blackheads and pores that appear enlarged. One thing needs to be said here: pore diameter is anatomical and cannot be reduced. What changes is how full it is. An unclogged pore reflects less shadow and is less visible.

Before a subsequent treatment. Skin cleared of its layer of dead cells absorbs what you apply afterward better. It makes sense to use it the evening before an important serum.

How often to use an enzyme peel

The most frequently asked question—and the one people get wrong most often.

Combination or oily skin: once or twice a week.
Normal skin: once a week.
Dry or sensitive skin: once every ten to fifteen days, always starting with the lower frequency for two weeks before increasing.

Complete skin renewal takes about twenty-eight days in young adults and slows with age. Exfoliating every day does not speed it up: it interferes with a process that takes its own time, resulting in a weakened skin barrier that becomes red, tight, and more reactive to everything else.

There are three signs that you’re overdoing it: your skin burns when you apply products you used to tolerate, feels tight even immediately after moisturizer, or becomes both shiny and dull. In that case, stop for two weeks and start again more slowly.

How to use it, step by step

Always apply it to clean, dry skin, because water dilutes the product and reduces enzymatic activity. If you have worn makeup or used water-resistant sunscreen, you need to double cleanse first.

Apply an even layer, avoiding the eye and lip contours, leave it on for the time indicated by the manufacturer—usually between five and ten minutes—and rinse with lukewarm water. Never hot water: heat increases vasodilation, which is noticeable on freshly exfoliated skin.

Do not rub while rinsing. If you do, you have just turned a selective peel into a scrub.

Afterward, apply only moisturizer—no strong actives: on the evening of the peel, do not use retinoids, high-concentration vitamin C, or other acids. And the next morning, sun protection is not optional, because freshly renewed skin is more exposed.

How long does it take to see results?

Radiance and softness are noticeable immediately, from the first application: you have removed a layer that was making the skin look dull.

A more even texture and less visible pores require three to four weeks of regular use—that is, a complete renewal cycle.

When it comes to dark spots, the situation is different and needs to be stated honestly: exfoliation alone does little to fade them. You need an active ingredient that acts on melanin production, as well as daily sun protection; otherwise, they will come back. The peel is the step that helps the others work better, not the star of the show.

When someone tells me that the peel did nothing for them, I almost always discover that they were using it three times a week. It is not a product that works better the more you use it: it works better when you use it at the right frequency and then let the rest of your routine do its job.

At-home peels and professional peels: where is the line?

It is the most important distinction in the entire article, because they are called the same thing but are not the same.

A cosmetic peel—the kind you buy at a pharmacy and use at home—works on the stratum corneum, meaning the surface. It improves the skin’s appearance and texture. It is safe because its concentration and pH are regulated by European cosmetics legislation.

Medium and deep peels are a different category: they act at greater depths, require downtime, and must be performed by a doctor. They address problems that a cosmetic product cannot, and carry real risks if performed incorrectly or at the wrong time of year.

Put very simply: if a treatment requires you to avoid the sun for weeks, it is not a cosmetic product and should not be done at home.

I also advise against at-home peeling with kitchen ingredients. Baking soda in particular has a pH of around 9, compared with 4.7–5.7 on the skin's surface: when used on the face, it disrupts the barrier instead of exfoliating it.

Frequently asked questions about enzyme peeling

Can it be used on acne-prone skin?

Yes, with caution, and not on inflamed lesions. For acne-prone skin, pore-penetrating keratolytic ingredients such as salicylic acid are generally more useful. You can find the complete overview in the acne guide.

Can it be used during pregnancy?

Plant enzymes and gentle acids such as mandelic acid are generally considered compatible, but during pregnancy, any cosmetic choice should be discussed with a gynecologist or dermatologist.

Is it also suitable for men?

Yes, and often less frequently than you might think: daily shaving is already a form of mechanical exfoliation. Those who shave every day can use it once every ten days.

Is it better in the morning or evening?

In the evening. This allows the skin to recover overnight and avoids sun exposure in the hours immediately afterward.

Does it sting? Is that normal?

A slight tingling sensation that passes within a few minutes can occur. Burning, persistent redness, or a feeling of heat are not normal: in that case, rinse immediately and do not repeat the treatment.

Does it replace a professional facial?

No, they are different things. At-home peeling maintains the results over time; comedone extraction is a manual procedure that shouldn't be improvised at home.
