L'rice bran oil is extracted from the outer layer of the grain of Oryza sativa, the part removed when white rice is refined. It belongs to the vegetable oil family and is one of the most widely used oils in Japanese cosmetics, where the tradition of rice in beauty goes back centuries.
Its signature component is gamma-oryzanol, a complex of esters offerulic acid found almost exclusively in this oil: it combines antioxidant action with the ability to absorb part of ultraviolet radiation. The oil also contains linoleic and oleic acids, which replenish the lipids in the barrier, as well as a significant amount of vitamin E.
It is suitable for dry skin and skin that has lost its radiance, and has a lightweight texture that also makes it suitable for those who find vegetable oils too heavy. Apply it to still-damp skin; the comfort is immediate, while the softening effect develops over a couple of weeks.
It is one of the few oils that combine nourishment and antioxidant protection in the same raw material: most vegetable oils do the first well and the second only minimally. It is particularly well suited to body products, where the area to be treated is large and the lightweight texture makes the application more pleasant.
