The panthenol, in INCI Panthenol, is provitamin B5. It belongs to two families at the same time — humectants and ingredients that support the skin barrier — and is one of the most widely used molecules in dermocosmetics precisely because of this dual nature.
Once on the skin, it is converted into pantothenic acid, a precursor of coenzyme A, which is involved in the synthesis of the lipids that keep the stratum corneum compact. At the same time, it acts as a humectant, drawing in and retaining water in the superficial layers. This combination is what makes it so effective: it provides immediate relief while also supplying the skin with the material it needs to rebuild its barrier.
It is used on dry skin or skin that is temporarily under stress: after sun exposure, after shaving, during cold weather, or alongside exfoliating ingredients whose intensity it helps balance. Comfort is felt immediately; barrier recovery takes two to three weeks.
It is among the ingredients with the widest tolerability profile available: suitable during pregnancy, for children's skin, and for more reactive skin. This is why it appears in products designed for very different situations, and is often the ingredient that makes a demanding formula suitable for everyday use.
