The mullein, in INCI Hydrolyzed Verbascum Thapsus Flower, is obtained from the yellow flowers of Verbascum thapsus, the tall, velvety plant that grows wild in uncultivated areas. It belongs to the family of hydrolyzed flower extracts, meaning they are made more easily absorbed by the skin.
The flowers are rich in mucilage and flavonoids. Hydrolysis breaks down the longer chains into fragments that spread more evenly across the surface, where they form a uniform film: the skin looks smoother and light reflects off it more evenly. The flavonoids add an antioxidant contribution that complements the immediate optical effect.
It works on uneven texture and an uneven complexion, and is formulated in serums that target a more even complexion. It is used morning and evening; the smoothing effect can be noticed from the first applications.
It is an ingredient that performs best alongside carotenoids such as lycopene: while these work on skin tone over time, mullein acts immediately on its surface. Two different ways of making the complexion more even, which add up in the same formula.
