L'mallow flower and leaf extract is obtained from the two aerial parts of the Malva sylvestris plant, harvested together. It belongs to the family of soothing botanical ingredients and differs from extract made from the leaf alone: the plant is the same, but the composition is not.
The mucilages — polysaccharides that form a gel when they come into contact with water — are found mainly in the leaf and are responsible for the enveloping sensation mallow leaves on the skin. The flower additionally contains anthocyanins, the purple pigments that give it its color, with an antioxidant component that the leaf alone does not have.
