Gardenia Stems is a culture of meristematic cells from Gardenia jasminoides, a patented biotechnology active ingredient. The plant has a centuries-old tradition in Chinese medicine, where it is known as Zhi Zi; biotechnology has isolated and concentrated the fraction that works on collagen.
The molecule responsible is feruloyl-6-glucoside, a phenylpropanoid present at a very high concentration, alongside phytosterols, amino acids, and polysaccharides. Its distinctive feature is that it acts on three fronts simultaneously: it reduces the release of MMP-1, the main collagenase that degrades the dermal matrix; directly inhibits the activity of the enzyme already in circulation; and stimulates the synthesis of new collagen. Protecting what is already there and producing more are two different strategies, and here they coexist in the same molecule.
It is indicated for loss of firmness and sagging wrinkles, where the problem is not only producing less collagen but also degrading more of it. It is used in serum, morning and evening. Like all actives that work on fibroblasts, it requires consistency: results develop over the course of two months.
The three mechanisms are documented by in vitro tests on human fibroblasts in an accelerated-aging model, with statistically significant results for each one. The cell culture deserves a separate note: compared with traditional cultivation, it drastically reduces water consumption, takes up a negligible amount of space, and uses no pesticides, making it possible to work with rare species without removing them from the environment.
