INCI: Hydrolyzed Glycosaminoglycans

Hydrolyzed glycosaminoglycans, Moisturizing and skin-conditioning agents

In brief

  • What it is: A family of complex sugars found naturally in the skin, the same family as hyaluronic acid, here in hydrolyzed form.
  • What it does: Binds water and helps keep skin hydrated and maintain its elasticity.
  • Who it’s for: Skin that appears more dehydrated and less elastic with age.
  • Where to find it: HYALURON 8 HYDRA DEEP.

What are hydrolyzed glycosaminoglycans?

The glycosaminoglycans, listed in INCI as Hydrolyzed Glycosaminoglycans in their hydrolyzed form, are a family of complex sugars naturally found in the skin. L'hyaluronic acid is the best-known member of this family, but not the only one.

How they work on the skin

Like hyaluronic acid, they have a great ability to bind water: supplier documentation describes them as moisturizing and conditioning agents that help hydrate and maintain skinelasticity. The hydrolyzed form, made up of shorter fragments, spreads evenly over the surface.

Why their levels decrease with age

Studies on human skin show that glycosaminoglycan levels decrease with age, which is one of the factors associated with drier, less elastic skin. Replenishing them with cosmetics helps support skin hydration.

How they work with hyaluronic acid

In formulas, they complement different forms of hyaluronic acid to complete its action: they are not another form of hyaluronic acid, but enhance its work in hydrating the skin.

Frequently asked questions

Are glycosaminoglycans hyaluronic acid?

L'hyaluronic acid is the best-known glycosaminoglycan, but it’s not the only one. In formulas, they aren’t another form of hyaluronic acid: they complement it to enhance its hydrating effects.

Why does skin lose hydration and elasticity with age?

Glycosaminoglycan levels in the skin decrease with age, and this is one of the factors associated with drier, less elastic skin.

What does it mean for glycosaminoglycans to be hydrolyzed?

They are broken down into shorter fragments, which in this form spread evenly over the skin’s surface.
